Why you should choose to travel with Storlulebåten
Travel through time – across Lake Akkajaure
Step aboard Storlule, and follow in the wake of generations past. For decades, this boat was the only way to travel from the end of the road into the vast highlands of the north.
During the 20th century, the Lule River was regulated and transformed. Twelve hydroelectric power stations were built, and the small delta system around Ritsem became what is now Lake Akkajaure – the largest water reservoir in Europe. Today, the power of the Lule River provides nearly 30% of Sweden’s electricity.
You can drive as far as Ritsem. But to reach Padjelanta and Sarek National Parks, nestled in the heart of the World Heritage site Laponia, you must cross the lake – just as people have done for generations.
Storlule was built in 1958 on the island of Lidingö and still carries stories across the water. With two engines and a capacity of 200 horsepower, she can carry up to 95 passengers in one of the most scenic journeys in northern Europe.
To travel with Storlule is to travel through time.
Our crew will share stories and history along the way – about the land, the lake, the people, and the power that flows through it all.
And beyond the stories, this is the most environmentally friendly way to access Laponia. No noise in the sky. Just you, the lake, and a quiet passage into one of the cultural and unique landscape of Laponia, Sarek and Padjelanta.
